Drop in the Bucket

What type of brace/cast is this? And why would you choose this design?

Moderator's Response
The cast demonstrated is called a drop out cast. This type of cast is chosen when you want to increase one direction of motion while prohibiting another. In this case this is a drop out cast for the elbow. Notice extension is allowed but flexion is limited. As person progresses you may need to consider serial drop out casting. The goal for this patient is to increase elbow extension while protecting the flexion. The ultimate Goals are to increase extension, then flexion—without losing extension.
